Stock Market Highlights

Investors worried that fast-paced interest rate rises to manage growing inflation would hinder global economic development, thus the major equity indexes on the BSE and National Stock Exchange (NSE) finished nearly 1.5 percent down on Friday, reflecting losses in the global market.

The S&P BSE Sensex declined 866.65 points (1.56%) to close at 54,835.58, while the Nifty 50 dropped 271.40 points (1.63%) to 16,411.25. Both indices had started the day with strong losses, with the Sensex falling to an intraday low of 54,586.75 and the wider Nifty falling to 16,340.90.

On the Sensex, Bajaj Finance was the day’s biggest loss, plunging roughly 5%. Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Nestle India, Wipro, Infosys, Ultratech Cement, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), and HDFC Bank came in second and third, respectively. The biggest gainers, on the other hand, were Tech Mahindra, Power Grid Corporation of India, ITC, State Bank of India (SBI), NTPC, and Tata Steel.

US Markets

The main indexes on Wall Street continued to fall on Friday, as investors fretted that the Federal Reserve will have to raise interest rates more aggressively than planned to tackle inflation.

The Nasdaq, which is dominated by technology, closed at its lowest level since 2020, marking the worst losing run since the fourth quarter of 2012. The S&P 500 also lost for the fifth week in a row, the longest losing streak since the second quarter of 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 98.6 points, or 0.3 percent, to 32,899.37; the S&P 500 dropped 23.53 points, or 0.57 percent, to 4,123.34; and the Nasdaq Composite slid 173.03 points, or 1.4 percent, to 12,144.66.

Asian Markets

On Monday, Asian markets got off to a rocky start as US stock futures fell early on fears about interest rates, while a tighter lockdown in Shanghai fueled anxieties about global economic growth and a possible recession.

The MSCI Asia-Pacific Index outside of Japan declined 0.3 percent, while Japan’s Nikkei sank 1.2 percent.

SGX Nifty

The wider index in India opened gap-down with a loss of 204 points, according to SGX Nifty trends. On the Singaporean market, the Nifty futures were trading at 16,215 levels.
